EDWARD Z.C. JUDSON (NED BUNTLINE)
Creator of the"dime novel" sends patent washing machines to the US Navy.
Autograph Letter signed: "Edward Z.C. Judson", 1p, 7½x9½. Mansion House, Charlestown, 1847 January 2. To J. Farnesworth, Clerk to Commandant, U.S. Navy Yard, Boston. In full: "In reply to your communication of the 31st Dec, I have the honor to inform the Government, through you, that two of the Patent Washing machines have been sent on board the U.S. Ship Franklin and placed at the disposal of her commander for examination and test". Writing under the name "Ned Buntline", Edward Z. C. Judson (1823-1886) wrote many adventure tales of the type which came to be known as "dime novels." Many of his later novels featured "Buffalo Bill" Cody, whose legend Judson/"Buntline" did much to promote. Judson served in the US Navy in the early 1840s and in the US Army during the Civil War. He led a life full of adventure, including a narrow escape from a lynch mob after fighting a duel, and had at least six wives. He was a founder of the American ("Know Nothing") Party of the 1850s, which appealed to anti-immigrant sentiment. None of this explains why he was sending washing machines to a US Navy vessel in 1847. when he was out of the service and already established as a writer. That question merits further research. Lightly creased at edges. Smudge at the final "n" of signature, else fine.
