The journalist apologizes for not being able to attend a gathering due to a case of
influenza
Autograph letter signed: "Edwin Arnold", 1 page, 4¼x7. 225, Cromwell Mansions,
Kensington, S.W., 1893 March 24. To Mrs. Hart. In full: "Do not think me insensible to
your kindness in sending me the pleasant invitation for Wednesday. But I was the
unhappy victim of influenza and could not get out of doors". Edwin Arnold (1832-1904)
was a British educator, journalist and author best known for transmitting the literature and ideas
of India to the West. He wrote a life of Gautama Buddha (The Light of Asia, 1879) and
translated the Bhagavid Gita into English. Arnold, who also wrote the popular love poem
"Destiny", was also the editor of London's "Daily Telegraph", which funded Stanley's search for
David Livingstone in Africa and Sir Harry Johnson's exploration of Kilimanjaro in 1884. Notes
and soiled at upper left corner. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Mounting residue on
verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
