EDWIN ARNOLD
The British author, who shuns personal publicity, declines a request for an interview
ALS: "Edwin Arnold", 1p, 5x8. No place, no year, September 29. To unknown recipient. Begins: "Dear Sir". In full: "I am flattered by your note & its proposal - but there is nothing I shun so much as personal publicity. I believe I am about the only living person who has never been photographed! So you must not think me [illegible] if I decline to be interviewed, even with [illegible] & friendly objects as you name. On other ground I am always glad to see you. Yrs ever faithfully". Edwin Arnold (1832-1904) was a British educator, journalist and author best known for transmitting the literature and ideas of India to the West. He wrote a life of Gautama Buddha (The Light of Asia, 1879) and translated the Bhagavid Gita into English. Arnold, who also wrote the popular love poem "Destiny", was also the editor of London's "Daily Telegraph", which funded Stanley's search for David Livingstone in Africa and Sir Harry Johnson's exploration of Kilimanjaro in 1884. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Slightly soiled, stray ink marks at blank areas. Mounting remnants on verso (light show through at upper blank margin, which has three sets of pinholes. Otherwise, fine condition.
