EDWIN BALE
The British painter pens and signs this handwritten letter from 1889 in black
ink
Autograph letter signed: "Yours very truly/Edwin Bale", in black ink,
5x8. Dated September 11, 1889, on Magazine of Art London letterhead. In full:
"Dear Sir, Mr. Spielman has placed in my hands your letter in which you
suggest making a drawing on wood of the Thackery Portrait by S.M. Ward. I am
much obliged for the suggestions and we should like to enclose the portrait but
we have long since given up copying pictures by hand for wood engraving and we
now never make drawings on wood. The onlochromtlic process enables only
photography with the best possible results from pictures and having a photograph
or original drawing apart from the wood block rendering a comparison possible
between the original and the engraving final results, which was not possible
under the old system of drawing on wood. It shall be my pleasure if you wish to
send Mr. Dixon our photograph down to St. Alban when it will be convenient."
Edwin Bale (1842-1923) was a British painter, an art director for
Cassell&Company and a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water
Colours. Lightly toned. Some ink smears due to liquid, not affecting signature.
Fine condition.
