EDWIN CONGER
Signed as a Member of Congress (1886)
Signature: "E. H. Conger/March 5th 1886/Adel/Iowa", 7¼x2¼. Edwin Conger (1843-1907) enlisted in the 102nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry in 1861, rising from the rank of private to brevet major during the Civil War. He practiced business, law and agriculture before being elected Iowa State Treasurer (1880-1884). Then he represented the State as a Republican in the US House of Representatives (1885-1891). He was appointed US Minister to Brazil by President Harrison (1890-1893), returning to that post during the next Republican Presidency (McKinley's). In 1898 he was appointed US Minister to China, that being the title then given by the US to its ambassadors. Conger's arrival in China coincided with the rise of the anti-foreign Boxer movement ("Society of Harmonious Fists"). He was one of the Western diplomats besieged by the Boxers for 55 days in Beijing (June 20 - August 14, 1900), until rescued by the 8-nation military intervention (US, Japan and 6 European powers). Conger returned to the US to a hero's welcome, and wrote this letter during the visit. He then returned to China, helping to negotiate the Boxer Protocol and serving until 1905. Later he served briefly as US Ambassador to Mexico. Left edge uneven from previous binding. Lightly toned at top edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
