EDWIN MARKHAM
His famous poem The Man with the Hoe, signed in 1935
Poem Signed: "Edwin Markham/1935". 1 page, 8½x13. Titled: "THE MAN WITH THE  HOE/by EDWIN MARKHAM/Author of Lincoln, the Man of the People; The Ballad of the Gallows-bird, etc.". ©1899, 1924. According to text at the bottom of this page, "The poem has been repeatedly called 'the supreme poem of the century' and 'the battle-cry of the next thousand years.'" Markham (1852-1940, born Charles Edward Anson Markham in Oregon City, Oregon) is an American poet and lecturer best known for his social protest poem The Man with the Hoe (1899). This poem is based on a painting by Jean-Francois Millet about a peasant. Markham used this peasant to represent exploited men and women the world over. He also wrote Lincoln, Man of the People (1901), which was almost as popular as The Man with the Hoe. Encapsulated in Mylar. Not examined outside encapsulation. Lightly toned and creased. Light discolorations, which touch signature. Small tackhead-sized holes. Light tears in all edges. Bottom edges are lightly rounded. Otherwise, fine condition.
