EDWIN NEWMAN
A type letter from the reporter to comedian Ken Murray, flattered that he enjoys his news program
Typed Letter signed: "Ed Newman", 1p, 7¼x10½. On letterhead of NBC News. New York, N.Y., 1973 July 16. To Ken Murray, Beverly Hills, California. In full: "I don't know which to thank you for more - the book about San Simeon, or your kind words about me and 'Speaking Freely.' In any case, I am grateful for both. I wish the show went on at a more reasonable hour in Los Angeles. A good many people there have written to us about it, but that is in the hands of the local station. I am flattered that anybody watches it at that time. I have cheerful memories of you from your comedian days, and that made it still more pleasant to hear from you. With good wishes. Sincerely," Edwin Newman (1919-2010), a respected broadcast news reporter who moderated Presidential debates in 1976 and 1984, was most known for his work with NBC's radio and televised news programs. Specializing in breaking news, it was Newman's voice that first made the announcement on NBC radio that President Kennedy had been shot, and he would also anchor the news coverage on Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination. He covered several other hot button topics during his time with NBC, being the go to guy when a new story broke out. After leaving NBC, he worked in daytime television, being nominated for 3 and winning one daytime Emmy. Ken MURRAY was a versatile entertainer who hosted a TV variety show (1950-1953). Lightly creased at top. Fine condition.
