EILEEN FARRELL
In hopes to stop receiving bulletins from the organization, Soprano Eileen Farrell pens a letter to resign from the National Association of Teachers of Singing
Autograph letter signed "Eileen Farrell" in blue ink. 1 page, 5½x8½, on Farrell's personalized letterhead. May 10, 1980. In full: "I wish to resign from the National Association of Teachers of Singing, Inc. and would appreciate it if you did not send the NATS Bulletin. Thank you.". Soprano Farrell (1920-2002, born in Willmantic, Connecticut) won a Grammy in 1962 for a recording of Richard Wagner's Wesendonck Lieder and Götterdämmerung's immolation of Brünhilde. But despite being a popular opera singer in the 1950s and 1960s, she had an uneasy relationship with opera and, in particular, with the management of the Metropolitan Opera. (She reportedly had a sign hung up outside her office at Indiana University, where she taught after retiring from opera at the end of the 1960s, that said "Help stamp out opera") Despite having a huge opera voice, she prefered pop, jazz and blues to opera and radio and concert halls to opera halls, and she recorded several albums of jazz and pop. She was also a frequent soloist with the New York Philharmonic and soloed with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir for an abridged version of George Fredric Handel's Messiah. Normal mailing folds. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso. Fine condition.
