Eileen Heckart signs a document to appear on Alice.
Partly Printed Carbon DS: "Eileen Heckart" as Player in
ink, 2p, 8½x14 and 8½x11. No place, 1976 November 29. Signed on first
page. Headed: "Actors Television Motion Picture Weekly Players Contract".
Contract between the actress and Warner Bros. Television for her to play the
role of "Rose Hyatt" on an episode of the TV sitcom, Alice. The
program was entitled "Mother-in-Law", and Heckart was to be paid a weekly salary
of $3,000 for a total aggregate salary of $6,000. Initialed: "EH"
to right of point 4, which relates to appearing in television trailers and
compensation for such appearances. Also signed by a representative of
Warner Bros. Television. Heckart appeared as Rose Hyatt on episodes 12 and
13, which aired on December 11 and December 18, 1976, during the first season of
Alice. The previous year, she had appeared on three episodes of
Mary Tyler Moore, playing Flo Meredith, Mary's sassy aunt, a role
she would reprise on Lou Grant in 1980. Award-winning stage and screen
actress Eileen Heckart (1919-2001) had won the Academy Award for Best
Supporting Actress in 1972 for Butterflies Are Free and was
nominated for the Oscar in the same category in 1956 for The Bad
Seed. Heckart, who garnered Emmy Awards for Win Me a Place at
Forest Lawn (1967) and Love and War (1974), had appeared on Broadway
from the mid-1940s and was nominated for Tony Awards for The Dark at
the Top of the Stairs (1958), Invitation to a March (1961) and
Butterflies Are Free (1970). She won the Theatre World Award for
Picnic in 1953 and received a special Tony Award for Excellence in
Theatre in 2000. The character actress appeared in a number of feature
films, including Somebody Up There Likes Me (1956), Bus Stop
(1956), Heller in Pink Tights (1960), Up the Down Staircase (1967)
and The First Wives Club (1996), and several made-for-TV films and plays,
including The Trip to Bountiful (1953), A Doll's House (1959),
F.D.R.: The Last Year (1980, as Eleanor Roosevelt), Triumph Over
Disaster: The Hurricane Andrew Story (1993) and Ultimate Betrayal
(1994). Heckart also starred as Mother Emma Buchanan on The Five Mrs.
Buchanans (1994), appeared as a regular in several TV shows and made
guest appearances on a number of TV anthologies and series, including
Suspense, Studio One, Philco Television Playhouse,
Playhouse 90, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Defenders,
The Fugitive, Gunsmoke, Barnaby Jones, Trapper John,
M.D., Home Improvement and Cybill. Lightly creased.
Transference from type at some areas (all legible). Staple at upper left corner,
