6½x8½. Elaine Hammerstein (1897-1948) was an American silent film
actress, the daughter of opera producer Arthur Hammerstein and the
granddaughter of Oscar Hammerstein. In 1913, Hammerstein appeared in her
first Broadway production, the musical High Jinks. Two years
later, she appeared in another Broadway play, and then began acting in films.
During her career, she appeared in 44 films, including The Silent
Master (1917), The Woman Game (1920), and Ladies of Leisure
(1926). For one film, The Midnight Express (1924), Hammerstein was
reported to be dating fellow co-star William Haines, when in actuality Haines
was homosexual. Soon after, Hammerstein married actor Alan Crosland, who
later died in a car accident in 1936. She would suffer the same fate, though
with a different husband, dying in 1948 while riding as a passenger in a car in
Mexico. Toned. Image slightly silvered. Corners worn and creased. Light surface
creases (not seen head on). Top left corner torn. Slightly soiled on edges.
Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine
condition.
