Typed letter signed "Elbert Hubbard". 1 page, 8 ¼ x 10 ¾, on letterhead of The Roycrofters De Luxe Books and Things, East Aurora, New York. Typed on handmade paper with irregular edges and highly detailed watermark of Hubbard in upper left corner. Sept. 15, 1906. Addressed to Mrs. Joseph J. Wise, New York City. In full: "Dear Mrs. Wise: Thank you very much for you kind letter just received, wherein you call my attention to a little break I made in reference to our friend, California Bill. You are certainly right about this. Bill is all right in his way, but it will not do to allow a man like him to get to a point where he rules over us. With all kind wishes, ever Your sincere,". Hubbard (1856-1915, born in Bloomington, Illinois) was a writer, editor and printer whose most famous work was A Message to Garcia (1899). Hubbard gave up newspaper and advertising work in 1892 to found the communal art colony Roycroft Press in order to revive old handicrafts, especially artistic printing. Hubbard went down with the Lusitania when it was sunk by the Germans in 1915. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Adhesive residue on verso, which shows through and touches signature. Light nicks at left and right edges. Folded once horizontally and thrice vertically and unfolded. Lightly torn along fold at right edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
