ELBIE FLETCHER
Shown on the field before a game, hitting fly balls
Photograph signed: "Elbie Fletcher". B/w, 8x10. Elbie Fletcher (1916-1994) reached the Major Leagues in an unusual way. The Boston Braves held a contest in which fans voted for a high school athlete deserving a tryout with the team. Fletcher's family and friends voted multiple times, but Elbie made the team anyhow. He played for the National League Braves and the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1934 to 1949, interrupted by World War II, making the Al-Star team in 1943. An outstanding defensive first baseman with a fine eye at the plate, he led the NL in on base percentage three times and in walks twice, and was at or near the top in all the defensive ratings year after year. Lightly creased. Lightly worn. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso (slight show through, not visible head on). Otherwise, fine condition.
