ELBRIDGE G. LAPHAM
Signature on letterhead of US Senate Chamber
Signature: "E. G. Lapham/Canandaigua, N.Y." as US Senator, 4¼x3¼. Letterhead of US Senate Chamber. Elbridge Gerry Lapham (1814-1890) represented New York in the US House (1875-1881). In 1881, newly elected Republican President James Garfield defied the tradition of "Senatorial courtesy" by appointing as New York Collector of Customs an opponent of Republican Senator and New York party boss Roscoe Conkling. Conkling resigned his Senate seat in protest, and persuaded his colleague Thomas Platt to do the same. US Senators were not yet directly elected, and Conkling was confident the New York legislature would return him and Platt to office. Instead, after prolonged debate, the Assembly chose Elbridge Lapham and Warner Miller for the seats, bringing an inglorious end to Conkling's political career. Lapham did not seek re-election. Adhesive and paper residue (previous mounting) at corners and on verso. Horizontal fold crease 1 from bottom edge. Lightly toned.
