Autograph Letter signed: "Eleanor Robson", 2 pages (integral leaf),
9¾x6½ open flat, 5x6½ closed. No place, no date ("Thursday"). To "My
dear Mrs. Kidder", in full: "Many and sincere are the
congratulations I send on the success of your husband's play! I intended
on sending my good wishes for the opening but vaccination made me forget much I
wanted to remember. Will you forgive my negligence and accept congratulations
with my love. Sincerely". English-born American stage actressEleanor Robson Belmont (1879-1979) began her acting career in stock
companies, in San Francisco at age 17, and made her New York debut in 1900. A
major Broadway star for the decade of the 1900's, she retired following her
marriage to financier and racehorse enthusiast August Belmont, Jr. in 1910.
He died in 1924, but she remained active in New York's theatre life - always
called Mrs. August Belmont - for another half century: the first woman on the
board of the Metropolitan Opera Association, and the founder of the Metropolitan
Opera Guild. She helped set the pattern for mixed public/private funding of
the arts in the US. Lightly toned. Corners lightly worn. Folds. Slightly soiled.
Otherwise, fine condition.
