stage actressEleanor Robson (Belmont), 1879-1979, began her
acting career in stock companies, in San Francisco at age 17, and made her New
York debut in 1900. A major Broadway star for the decade of the 1900's, she
retired following her marriage to financier and racehorse enthusiast August
Belmont, Jr. in 1910. He died in 1924, but she remained active in New York's
theatre life - always called Mrs. August Belmont - for another half century: the
first woman on the board of the Metropolitan Opera Association, and the
founder of the Metropolitan Opera Guild. She helped set the pattern for
mixed public/private funding of the arts in the US. Creased and lightly toned.
