ELEANOR ROBSON BELMONT
A letter from the actress to a friend, thanking her for a booklet on infantile paralysis
Typed letter signed: "Eleanor R. Belmont", in black ink, 5½x7¼. May 29, 1958. New York
City, New York. In full: "Dear Mr. O'Connor: Thank you for sending me the Twentieth
Anniversary booklet on the subject of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis.
May I offer you my heartiest congratulations. It is a great piece of work, of which you
and the Nation may be proud. Sincerely yours". English-born American stage actressEleanor Robson Belmont (1879-1979) began her acting career in stock companies, in San
Francisco at age 17, and made her New York debut in 1900. A major Broadway star for
the decade of the 1900's, she retired following her marriage to financier and racehorse
enthusiast August Belmont, Jr. in 1910. He died in 1924, but she remained active in New
York's theatre life - always called Mrs. August Belmont - for another half century: the first
woman on the board of the Metropolitan Opera Association, and the founder of the
Metropolitan Opera Guild. She helped set the pattern for mixed public/private funding of the
arts in the US. Normal mailing folds. Stained. Date stamp on verso. Fine condition.
