English author Eleanor Hibbert (1906-1993) aspired to write realistic
psychological novels about modern life, but after nine of her works were
rejected by publishers, she found success writing historical and Gothic
romances. Hibbert used several different pen names, the most popular being
Victoria Holt (Gothic fiction) and Jean Plaidy (historical fiction about the
crowned heads of Europe). She sold more than 100 million books during her
lifetime. The House of a Thousand Lanterns was published in 1974. Fine
