This handwritten check for the banker and merchant to be paid £50 by the state is signed by the Justice of the Peace. Dated 1781
Autograph check signed: "Eleazer Wales" in brown ink, and endorsed on verso: "Nehem Hubbard". 8x6¼. February 6, 1781. Check made out to Nehem Hubbard to be paid fifty pounds by the State. ELEAZER WALES (1732-1794) was a Yale graduate and Presbyterian Minister. In addition to his public service on the Pay Table, he was for a time a Justice of the Peace in Hartford. NEHEMIAH HUBBARD (1752-1837) was a prominent banker and merchant in 18th century Middletown, Connecticut. He served as Deputy Quartermaster for Middletown during the American Revolutionary War, and was also the first President of the Middletown Bank. His family's home, named the Nehemiah Hubbard House is listed on the National Record of Historic Places. Toned. Edges irregular. Vertical and horizontal folds. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso and written vertically across front. Ink note slightly affecting signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
