Program for a 1951 "Presentation of the Honorary Freedom of the Borough" of Deal, England for former Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Signed by Eliot Crawshay-Williams, a former Member of Parliament and Churchill's former employee in the Colonial Office.
Program signed "E. Crawshay Williams" in blue ink. Pencil notations in unknown hand. B/w, 6½x8¼, 4 pages, bound in heavy paper covers with 2 staples. Program for an Aug. 15, 1951 Presentation of the Honorary Freedom of the Borough of Deal, Kent, England, to former Prime Minister Winston Churchill at the Odeon Theatre. Crawshay-Williams (1879-1962), the son of a Welsh politician, was Member of Parliament for Leicester from 1910 to 1913, when he resigned after being named in a divorce case brought by another M. P., Hubert Carr-Gomm. Before entering Parliament, Crawshay-Williams was employed by future Prime Minister Winston Churchill at the Colonial office from 1906 to 1908. Before joining Parliament, he wrote the book Across Persia (1907), about an eight-month journey that he took across Iran. Later in life, he took up the pen in earnest and became an author, playwright, screenwright and poet, with writing credits on 3 movies during the early 1930s, the play Fascination, the books Night in the Hotel, Simple Story: An Accidental Autobiography and Leaves from an Officer's Notebooks, as well as Songs on Service, a collection of poetry. Lightly soiled and creased. Staples are rusted. Paper clip impression on back cover. Rust stains from staples and on back cover. Otherwise in fine condition.
