ELIOT JANEWAY
Index card signed by economist Eliot Janeway
Signature: "Eliot Janeway" in blue ink. Blue ink notations on
verso in unknown hand. 5x3 ruled card. Known as "Calamity Janeway" for his
perennially dire stock market predictions, American economist Janeway
(1913-1993) was an important proponent of the theory that that political
pressures can affect economic trends and markets. Janeway began writing for
The Nation in the 1930s, where first came to public attention by
correctly predicting the recession of 1937 and 1938. He also wrote
columns for the Chicago Tribune-New York New Syndicate in the 1960s and 1970 and
contributed to magazines like Time, Newsweek and Fortune.
Janeway wrote several books, including The Struggle for Survival (1951),
which analyzed Franklin D. Roosevelt's war mobilization policies; and
Prescriptions for Prosperity (1983) and The Economics of Chaos
(1989), both on government policies. Janeway appeared to be politically neutral
in his analyses and criticized liberal icon Roosevelt as well as conservative
hero Ronald Reagan, among others. An early supporter of Lyndon Baines
Johnson, he broke with the president after he escalated the Vietnam War in 1965
without raising taxes. Lightly toned. Paper loss on verso (no show-through).
Otherwise in fine condition.
