ELIOT NESSThe law enforcement officer famous for his role as the leader of the real-life "Untouchables" signed this check Check Signed: "Eliot Ness" in ink. 7¼x3. Dated June 29, 1949. Made payable in the amount of $40. Filled out and signed by Ness. Eliot Ness (1903-1957) was anAmerican Prohibition agent famous for his efforts to enforce Prohibition in Chicago, Illinois, and the leader of a legendary team of nine law enforcement agents known as The Untouchables. The Untouchables, active from 1929-1931, put pressure on gangster Al Capone, restricting his access to key income streams. Capone tried to bribe some of the members of Ness's team with a million dollars, but they refused. The elite squad could not be touched by bribery money, and this fact led to their nickname. Capone was eventually convicted on tax evasion charges as part of a federal investigation. Following the national popularity of The Untouchables and stints in law enforcement positions at a statewide level, Ness's career and personal life began to fall apart in the late 1930s, partially due to his alcohol abuse problems. An autobiographical novel titled The Untouchables (1957) was published just a month after he passed away and blends fact and fiction, much as Ness purportedly did late in his life. Numerous commercial creations have manifested from the book, most notably the 1959-1963 television series starring Robert Stack. Expected bank stamps, cancellation holes, and perforations along edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
