ELIZA COOK
Signature of the English poet, affixed to a card with (erroneous)
typed caption
Signature: "Eliza Cook", 2½x2½, Affixed to card with erroneous
typed caption (which gets her name and death date wrong). English poet Eliza
Cook (1818-1889), from a poor family and largely self-educated, published
her first volume of poems, Lays of a Wild Harp, at age 17. Her poem "The
Old Armchair" was widely circulated in Britain and the US for many years.
Cook, author of at least six collections of poems, was a strong advocate of
working class and women's rights. Whoever supplied the typed caption here may
have confused her with another Victorian poet, Elizabeth Cooke. Toned. Fold
crease through center effecting signature. Corners cut. Otherwise, fine
condition.
