ELIZA JANE PRATTThe first woman to represent North Carolina in Congress signs this 3½x2 card Signature: “Miss Eliza Jane Pratt/ M.C., North Carolina”, in blue ink, 3½x2. Eliza Jane Pratt (1902-1981) was a congresswoman who represented North Carolina's 8th district. Pratt worked as a newspaper editor until she was hired as a secretary for Congressman Robert L. Doughton. From 1924 to 1946 she worked for Doughton and successors J. Walter Lambeth and William O. Burgin in North Carolina's 8th congressional district. In 1946, Burgin died during his tenure and Pratt was elected as a Democrat to fill the vacancy. She served the rest of Burgin's term (from May 25, 1946 until January 3, 1947), but she did not run in the 1946 general election. It would be another 45 years before another woman would be elected to Congress from North Carolina (Eva M. Clayton, 1992). After her brief stint as a member of Congress, Pratt went on to work for several different government agencies including the Office of Alien Property (1947-1951), the Agriculture Department (1951-1954), and the Library of Congress (1954-1956). Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
