ELIZA LESLIE
The American cookbook and etiquette author sends letter to colleague regarding new articles, signs name in black ink
Autograph letter signed: "Eliza Leslie" in black ink. 1 page, front and verso, 8¾x9. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. February 15, 1839. In part: "My dear Mr. Lavned, I receivd your letter this morning and hasten to answer it. I shall be glad as soon as possible to obtain from you two potential articles, one for the gift and the other for the Violet. The latter being a juvenile annual. It is, most probably, unnecessary to suggest to you that they should be written in regular measure rather than in the very diversified stanzas which has cause some of the best poems of Mrs. Nemans to be less popular than they deserve...As to the expense of the portage Mrs. Carey and Hart calculate on degrayign that of all the articles sent to their annuals by invitation; presuming, of course, that the authors will retain a copy of the manuscript. Very truly yours". Eliza Leslie (1887-1858) was an American author of popular cookbooks and etiquette books during the early nineteenth century. Her father was a Philadelphia watchmaker, and was personal friends with people such as Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. After a brief stint editing an annual gift book called The Gift, which published contributions from authors such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Nathaniel Parker Willis, Elizabeth F. Ellet, Lydia Sigourney and Charles Fenno Hoffman, Leslie began publishing her own work. Her work includes Seventy-Five Receipts for Pastry, Cakes, and Sweetmeats (1828), American Girl's Book (1831), Miss Leslie's Behavior Book (1834), Amelia, or, A Young Lady's New Receipt-Book (1850) and Miss Leslie's New Cookery Book (1857). Toned. Normal mailing folds. Soiled and stained throughout. Edges torn and frayed. Creased throughout. Paper affixed in left margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
