ELIZABETH ARDEN. TLS: "Elizabeth Arden", 1p, 7¼x10½. New York, 1962 June 8. On company letterhead to Mr. Peter B. Shikes. In full: "Thank you very much for your nice letter asking for my autograph. I am indeed flattered that I should be included in your collection of famous people. With my very best wishes...and herewith my signature." Former nursing student Florence Graham went into a beauty salon partnership with Elizabeth Hubbard on New York's Fifth Avenue in 1910. After the partnership split up, the Canadian-born Florence, who continued the business under the name Elizabeth Arden, hired chemists to create the first in a line of 300 beauty products. A pioneer in the advertising of cosmetics, Elizabeth Arden popularized makeup at a time when beauty aids were thought to be used by "low women". In 1922, she expanded her American enterprise to Paris. At the time of her death in 1966, there were 100 Elizabeth Arden beauty salons worldwide, offering hair styling, facials, massages and other beauty services behind their famous "Red Doors". Lightly shaded and slightly creased at edges. Overall, fine condition.
