ELIZABETH WILLIAMS CHAMPNEY
Autograph Letter with her own signature as requested, but without that of her husband, who had sailed for Europe
Autograph Letter signed: "Elizabeth W. Champney", 1 page, 3½x4½. No place, no date. To "My Dear Miss Robinson", in full: "I am very sorry that as Mr. Champney has sailed for Europe I can only send you my own autograph. Sincerely". Author Elizabeth Williams Champney (1850-1922) graduated from Vassar in its second class (1869). She married landscape and portrait painter James W. "Champ" Champney in 1873, and the newlyweds embarked for Europe. Her travels inspired a series of eleven "three Vassar girls" novels, beginning with Three Vassar Girls Abroad (1878). The novels, popular with young women, whetted interest in education, careers and foreign travel. In general, her books were praised more for their motivational value than for their literary style. Later she wrote a children's series about "Witch Winnie," illustrated by her husband. After Champ's death in 1903, she wrote romances for adult women. One horizontal fold crease through center. Lightly toned. Mounting residue on corners of verso. Otherwise fine condition.
