Cordial letter to fellow author Barnaby Conrad
Autograph Letter signed: "Ella", 1 page, 5½x8½. No place (but postmarked San Francisco), 1991 January 4. To Barnaby Conrad, Carpenteria, California. In full: "So Mayo lives - and a lot better than I'd have expected. I never did think what her ultimate fate would be, but she was definitely a lost soul. I'm glad she's been given a second chance, in fact I was delighted. A palace on top of Mt. Igueldo - by God. Why not? I'm so pleased that Mayo is perpetuated, with or without temporal extension, through your teaching. It's always meant a lot to me. And what you sent was a real delight to read. With best wishes to you for a happy & fulfilling New Year". ELLA LEFFLAND (b. 1931) has written five novels and a short story collection. Her novels include Rumors of Peace (1970) and The Knight, Death and the Devil (1990, based on the life of Herman Goering). Her story "Last Courtesies" won an O'Henry Award in 1974. Her Mrs. Munck was made into a film. Barnaby Conrad, the author of numerous fiction and non-fiction books, ran the Santa Barbara Writers' Conference from 1973 to 2004. That conference, and his several books on the craft of writing, probably inspire Leffland's praise of his teaching. Mount Igueldo overlooks the harbor of San Sebastian, Spain. Multiple mailing folds. Minor ink smears (legible) not effecting signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
