ELLIN (MRS. IRVING) BERLIN
The wife of songwriter Irving Berlin signed this handwritten note on the back of a
postcard
Autograph Post Card Signed: “Ellen” in blue ink. 3¾x5½. Dated January 25, 1955. Sent to
Louis. In Full: “I have to send this to your office as I haven't your address here. Linda sent me
your piece 'Linda B. & Gloria S.' You are a really kind, understanding human being. That child
has been trying so hard, getting discouraged and trying again. This boost means just as much as
you knew it would mean. Thank you with all my heart and Irving's with love to you and your
beautiful and oh so lucky bride”. Ellin Berlin (1903-1988) was a novelist who married famed
songwriter Irving Berlin in 1926. The two remained married until her death. Her
marriage to Berlin was quite the controversy in its day; Ellin (née McKay) was a Roman
Catholic debutante and was forbidden to marry Berlin, an Orthodox Jew. Despite her father's
wishes, she married Berlin and was refused her inheritance in return. The young bride became
a novelist and newspaper columnist as well as a mother, raising three daughters while
Berlin continued his entertainment career. Lightly toned. Note on verso in unknown hand.
Otherwise, fine condition.
