ELLIOTT ROOSEVELT. Signature: "Elliott Roosevelt/June 3rd 1939.", 4¼x6 album leaf. Ink note (unknown hand) at lower margin: "Elliot (sic) Roosevelt - 6-3-39". Elliott Roosevelt (1910-1990), named in honor of his maternal grandfather (Theodore Roosevelt's brother), was the fourth child and third son of President Franklin Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt. He was born in New York City on September 23, 1910, ten months after his brother, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Jr. (1909-1909), had died at seven months old. At the time of Elliott's birth, his father was practicing law with the firm of Carter, Ledyard and Milburn. Less than two months later, on November 8, 1910, FDR was elected to the New York State Senate from Dutchess County (his first elective office). During WWII, Elliott was a member of Lieutenant Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr.'s air escort when, on August 12, 1944, Kennedy's plane exploded over Suffolk, England killing him. Elliott later served as Mayor of Miami Beach, Florida (1965-1967) and was a best-selling author. His mystery novels, which portray his parents, with his mother as sleuth, include Murder in the East Room, Murder in the Rose Garden, Murder in the Executive Mansion and Murder in Georgetown. Roosevelt was married to Elizabeth Browning Donner (1932-1933, divorced), Ruth Googins (1933-1944, divorced), actress Faye Emerson (1944-1950, divorced), Minnewa Bell Ross (1951-1960, divorced) and Patricia Whitehead (1960-1990, his death). Elliott was the last surviving son of Eleanor and Franklin until his death in 1990. Ink at period after date has spread. Lightly creased, slightly soiled. Binding holes and 3 file holes at upper blank margin. Overall, fine condition.
