Typed Letter signed: "Ellis Arnall", as Governor of Georgia, 1 page, 8x10¼, affixed to an 8½x11 page (2 surfaces). Atlanta, Georgia, 1945 November 29. On letterhead of the Executive Department, Ellis Arnall Governor, addressed to Capt. Ralph E. Ward, Washington, D.C. In full: "Dear Captain Ward: Acknowledgment is made of your letter of November 26, requesting my autograph. I hope that my signature below will serve your purpose. With kindest regards and all goos (sic) wishes, I am Sincerely yours," Ellis Gibbs Arnall (1907-1992) was born in Newnan, Georgia. After graduating from the University of Georgia, School of Law, he began practicing law in 1931. He was elected to the Georgia General Assembly and soon after he became the Georgia Attorney General. Arnall was elected as the Governor of Georgia and served from January 12, 1943 until January 14, 1947. While Governor he reformed the state's penal system, attained accreditation for Georgia's University system and made Georgia the first state to lower the voting age to 18. He sought reelection to the office twice, but was unsuccessful. From the collection Ralph Errington Ward (1926-2009) a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II. Ward became President and CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate. Adhesive on verso (affixing letter to the page). Multiple mailing folds. Lightly toned. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
