ELLIS P. BUTLER
Ellis Parker Butler, author of Pigs is Pigs, signed this 1923 typed letter on his personalized stationery with a drawing of a pig. He suggests places lecture halls in his home of Flushing, New York, adding "This place is about the worst for lecturers of any in the world-we're so near New York."
Typed letter signed "Ellis Parker Butler/[drawing of pig]".Pencil notations in top right corner in unknown hand. 1 page, 6x7, on Parker's personalized stationery. June 1, 1923. Addressed to Mr. F. J. Emmerich, New York City. In full: "Dear Mr. Emmerich: About dates for Clement Wood here: This place is about the worst for lecturers of any in the world-we're so near New York. The Good Citizenship League,Flushing,N.Y.,is about the only club that pays anything, and you have them on your list,I'm sure. If not you might address its Literature Committee. It is a woman's club. Now and then some organization asks me about a speaker, and I'll be glad to recommend Wood, but most of them get speakers through personal pull and don't pay. You might let me know what Wood's rates are. Sincerely yours,". American author and humorist Butler (1869-1937)is probably best known for the 1905 short story Pigs Is Pigs. (Butler may have thought that he was a little too well known for it; according to his New York Times obituary, "he often complained that his name never appeared in print without the phrase 'author of Pigs Is Pigs'") (Like here, incidentally) He wrote 32 books and over 2,000 stories over 40 years, in spite of the fact that he was only a part-time writer. Yes! He worked for a living, first as a magazine publisher and then as a banker. Seven of his books, stories and scenarios were turned into movies; Pigs Is Pigs was adapted twice, in 1914 and 1954. He was also a founder member of the Dutch Treat Club and Author's League of America. Lightly toned and creased. Light discoloration in bottom left corner (does not touch signature). Folded once and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
