The legendary tennis and golf player sends amusing letter to a fan,
signs name in black ink
Autograph letter signed: "Ellsworth Vines" in black ink. 1
page, 8½x11. Written on personal La Quinta Hotel Golf Club letterhead, Vines
serving as Vice President. La Quinta, California. June 27, 1989. In full:
"Dear Mr. Buskirk: Enclosed find signed photos [not included]. To
[sic] bad you could not have found a better picture as my fat stomach really
shows. Since then diet has reduced it considerably. Yours truly".
Ellsworth Vines (1911-1994) was an American tennis champion during the
1930s, who ranked the No. 1 World player for four years (1932, 1935, 1936 and
1937), during which he won multiple Grand Slam titles including Wimbledon
(1932), the U.S. Open (1931, 1932), Wembley Pro (1934, 1935, 1936) and the
French Pro (1935). In 1940, Vines played his last tennis match, leaving the
sport at the top of his game to pursue a career in golf; he won three PGA
tournaments the 1946 Massachusetts Open, the 1951 Southern California
Championship and the 1955 Utah Open. Normal mailing folds. Creased throughout.
Toned and slightly soiled. Pencil notes on verso in unknown hand. Otherwise,
fine condition.
