ELLSWORTH VINES
Tennis champ who gave up the sport for golf
Signature: "E. Vines Jr.", 1½x1 slip, affixed to 3¼x1¾ sheet, which in turn is attached to lower edge of an envelope fragment (3½x3¾). Envelope fragment, postmarked Pasadena, California, April 11, 1933, with imprinted 3-cent stamp, is addressed (unknown hand) to Master Jimmy Timbers, Madison, Wisconson. Ellsworth Vines (1911-1994) won the U.S. (tennis) Open in 1931 and 1932 and the Wimbledon tournament in 1932. At the top of his game, Vines abandoned tennis for golf, a sport in which he was among the top-ten money winners twice, but never as successful as he had been in tennis. Mounting sheet and envelope (not signature slip) are lightly soiled. One-half-inch tear at lower left edge of envelope fragment. Otherwise, fine condition.
