ELMER F. LAYDEN. Printed Photograph inscribed and signed: "Best
wishes to/Wesley Baleria/from/Elmer F. Layden". B/w, 6¾x9¼. Affixed to the
foreground is a cutout (5½x1½ and 4½x1½) of the name "Notre/Dame". On October
18, 1924, after Notre Dame defeated Army 13-7, sportswriter Grantland Rice
wrote, in part: "Outlined against a blue, gray October sky, the Four
Horsemen rode again. In dramatic lore, they are known as famine, pestilence,
destruction and death. These are only aliases. Their real names are Stuhldreher,
Miller, Crowley and Layden...." Fullback Elmer Layden (1903-1973) was the
fastest of the quartet. He served as Commissioner of the National Football
League from 1941-1946. Lightly stained from show through of glue on verso.
