Typed letter signed: "Elmer MacKay" in black ink. 1 page,
5½x8½. Written on official Solicitor General of Canada letterhead. December 6,
1984. Addressed to Mr. John Buchanan of Oakdale Junior High School in Downsview,
Ontario. In full: "I appreciated receiving your letter of November
19th and am sending along an autographed photograph. Your good wishes on my
re-election to the House and appointment to Cabinet are heartwarming. It is
obvious Canadians made a clear and confident judgment about the future of this
country. Wishing you compliments of the season. Yours sincerely". Elmer
MacKay (b. 1936) is a Canadian politician; first elected to the Canadian
House of Commons as a member of the Progressive Conservative in 1971, MacKay
served as Minister of Regional Economic Expansion (1979-1980) before giving up
his seat in 1983, and then reclaiming the seat in 1984. His work for Prime
Minister Mulroney earned him a position as Solicitor General of Canada,
eventually serving as Minister of National Revenue and Minister of Public Works.
In Parliament from 1989-1991 he was responsible for the Atlantic Canada
Opportunities Agency Act and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.
MacKay was also closely involved in Prime Minister Mulroney's Airbus scandal,
believing to have drafted a false letter to legitimize the PM's "consultation
compensation", although he was never formally charged with any wrongdoing.
