Collection comprised of: 1) Signature: "Elmer Thomas/U.S.S.
Oklahoma/Aug, 3, 1945", 4x2½, card. Toned and lightly creased. Otherwise,
fine condition. 2) Typed Letter signed: "Elmer Thomas", 1 page,
8x10½, Multiple mailing folds. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
Washington, D.C., 1945 August 2. On letterhead of the Senate Committee on
Appropriations to Ralph Errington Ward, Washington, D.C. In full: "I
have your letter of July 31, requesting my autograph, and trust that my
signature to this letter will serve your purpose. With all good wishes, I am,
Sincerely". Both items are affixed to an 8½x11 page which also bears a
Senate transmittal envelope with Thomas' ink stamp frank. Lightly toned and
creased. Otherwise, fine condition. ELMER THOMAS (1876-1965), a lawyer
and state legislator, was a Democratic U.S. Representative from Oklahoma
(1927-1927), and a 4-term US Senator from that state (1927-1951). Thomas
proposed fighting the Depression by issuing currency backed by silver instead of
gold. From the collection of Ralph Errington Ward (1926-2009) a fighter
pilot and squadron commander in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II.
Ward went on to become President and CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc.,
transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate. Two
