ELMORE LEONARD
Handwritten letter to fellow author Barnaby Conrad on stationery
given to him at a book signing in Denver. He mentions his new novel, Pagan
Babies (2000)
Autograph Letter signed: "Dutch", 1 page, 6¼x4½ card. No
place, March 10, circa 2000. On personal letterhead to "Dear
Barney" [Barnaby Conrad]. In full: "Yes, of course. Use whatever
you want. Redoing the Miramar is the best news I've heard lately. My next one
will be out in Sept., Pagan Babies. This stationery was given to me when I
signed at the Tattered Cover in Denver. Best". Elmore Leonard
(1925-2013) is best known for his Westerns and crime novels, many
of which have been made into feature films. Beginning with Western short stories
in 1951 for such publications as "Argosy", "Zane Grey Western" and "The Saturday
Evening Post", Leonard then published The Bounty Hunters (1953), his
first novel, which was followed by four more Westerns over the next eight years
(his novel, Hombre, was chosen as one of the best Westerns of all
time by the Western Writers of America in 1961). Since 1985, when he
published Glitz, most of his novels -- Bandits, Touch,
Freaky Deaky, Killshot, Get Shorty, Maximum
Bob, Rum Punch (the basis of the film Jackie Brown),
Pronto, Riding the Rap, Out of Sight and Cuba
Libre - have become best sellers. Pagan Babies was released in 2000.
American author Barnaby Conrad founded the Santa Barbara Writers'
Conference and led through 2004. Lightly soiled at upper right margin.
