British stage and screen actress Elsa Lanchester (1902-1986) began her show
business career as a modern dancer with Isadora Duncan. Nominated for Best
Supporting Actress for Come to the Stable (1949) and Witness for the
Prosecution (1957), Lanchester had made her film debut in One of the
Best in 1927, two years before she married actor Charles Laughton. The
couple, who were married until his death in 1962, made a number of films
together, including The Private Life of Henry VIII, Tales of
Manhattan (1942), Forever and a Day (1943) and Witness for the
Prosecution. Lanchester also appeared in The Bride of Frankenstein
(1934), David Copperfield and Naughty Marietta (both 1935),
Lassie Come Home (1943), The Bishop's Wife (1947), Bell, Book
and Candle (1958) and Murder By Death (1976) and in the Disney films
Mary Poppins (1964, as the departing nanny) and That Darn Cat
(1965). She also appeared on TV's The John Forsythe Show (1965-1966) and
was a regular on Nanny and The Professor (1971). No show through from ink
note on verso. Fine condition.
