ELSIE FERGUSON
Her handwritten sentiment on stationery of Chicago's Blackstone hotel
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Very truly yours/Elsie Ferguson", 5¼x6¾. On letterhead of The Blackstone, Chicago. Elsie Ferguson (1883-1961) first appeared on stage as a chorus girl at age 17. Within a decade, she was a major Broadway star, renowned for her exceptional beauty. Her popularity was such that during World War I, she raised $85 million in Liberty Loans in less than an hour. Ferguson refused many movie offers, but finally found a film role she liked (Barbary Sheep, 1917). Or perhaps the bad luck of losing both of her principal producers, Henry B. Harris on the Titanic (1912), and Charles Frohman on the Lusitania (1915), caused her to consider her options. Most of her silent films have been lost, an exception being Witness for the Defense (costarring Werner Oland, 1917). The Library of Congress retains her talking picture, Scarlett Pages (1930), showing a fine actress past her prime in appearance. Her last stage appearance, a critically acclaimed one, was Outrageous Fortune (1943). Dying wealthy but without heirs, she left much of her wealth to animal welfare organizations. Toned and lightly worn. Creased through center from fold. Light adhesive residue on verso (no show-through). Otherwise, fine condition.
