Photograph inscribed and signed: "For Henry Slapinski/With best wishes/Elspeth Huxley". B/w, 3¼x4½. Elspeth Huxley (1907-1997) wrote 30 books on diverse subjects between 1935 and 1993, the best known being two memoirs of her childhood on a coffee farm in Kenya: The Flame Trees of Thika (1959) and The Mottled Lizard (1962). Her writings ranged from mysteries to biographies, including those of Florence Nightingale and explorer Robert Scott. A defender of colonialism early in her career, she later advocated independence for African nations. Her husband, Gervas Huxley, was the grandson of scientist Thomas Huxley and the cousin of author Aldous Huxley. Edges and corners slightly worn. Fine condition.
