The Secretary of the Army signs a letter to Barbara Norton, then head of the Public Relations department at the Sheraton-Park Hotel, thanking her for a copy of Tatler Magazine.
Typed letter signed: "Elvis Stahr Jr.", in blue ink, 1 page, 7x8. Secretary of the Army. Washington. January 18, 1962. In full: "Dear Barbara: Many thanks for your recent letter inclosing a copy of TATLER Magazine and calling my attention to the photograph which was taken at the Wright Memorial Dinner. I am delighted to have this memento. With all good wishes, Sincerely". Attorney and administrator Elvis Jacob Stahr, Jr. (1916-1998) was Professor of Law at the University of Kentucky (1947) before becoming Dean of the University of Kentucky College of Law (1948-1957) and then Provost of the University of Kentucky (1954-1957). Stahr then served as Vice Chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh (1957-1959) and as President of West Virginia University (1959-1961) before being appointed as U.S. Secretary of the Army (1961-1962) by President John F. Kennedy. After leaving that post, Stahr became President of Indiana University (1962-1968) and then President of the National Audubon Society (1968-1979). He then returned to his private law practice. Adhesive residue on verso, shows through front. Normal mailing folds. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
