Postcard photo of the opera star.
Postcard photograph inscribed and signed: "Emanuel List/New York/1935". B/w, 3½x5½ overall, image 3¼x4½ (one surface). Photo: Ernst Schneider. Captioned in lower margin: "Emanuel List/Staatsoper Berlin". EMANUEL LIST (1886-1967), the Vienna, Austria-born bass who graced the stages of some of the world's most prestigious opera houses, began his American career in vaudeville, burlesque and minstrel shows. He made his operatic debut in Vienna in 1922, and later appeared at Berlin's State Opera (1923-1933), London's Covent Garden (1925), several Salzburg Festivals (1931-1935) and the Bayreuth Festival (1933). In December 1933, List returned to the U.S., making his debut at the Metropolitan Opera as Hermann in Tannhauser. He remained on the Met's roster from 1933-1948 and 1949-1950, appearing in over 400 performances in nearly 20 roles. List, who also appeared in San Francisco and Chicago (1935-1937), returned to Venice in 1952. In addition to his stage performances in such roles as Osmin, Sarastro, Rocco, Hagen and Baron Ochs, List recorded Bach cantatas. Fine condition.
