EMIL FUCHS and NÈNA FALES PECK
Handwritten notes in a family guest book
ANS: "Emil Fuchs", 1p, 5½x8½. No place, dated by Fuchs: "Febr. 27, 1923". No salutation, but to the Wainwright family. In full: "'Lessing said in one of his writings: 'Reader how do you like me - but Reader, how would I like you?' now I like the Wainwright family very much and in leaving the question comes into my mind - will they like me too?" On verso, there is an ANS: "Nèna Fales Peck" at lower margin. Dated by Peck: "Feb 28th - March 5th 1923". In full, as written: "Dont yo nebber do nothin' at no time dat you nebber want no bardie to know nothin' about when day stars am shinin' cause dey'll twink let all ober de whole universe/I have had a wonderful time and its all your fault." At lower right corner, Peck has drawn a clown, possibly a self-caricature. Likely a page from the Wainwright family's guest book. Vienna-born American artist EMIL FUCHS (1866-1929) studied in Vienna and at the Royal Academy in London before coming to the U.S. in 1905. A prolific sculptor (Fuchs created a number of medals that remain highly collectible today), he also enjoyed celebrity as a portraitist of English and American "high society" figures. Little information is available on NINA FALES PECK. She is credited with composing the popular song "Dream of Me, Dear" in 1893, and appears on a Rhode Island concert program from 1925 as an "Entertainer Improvisatrice." Show through of writing at lower margin of front (not near Fuchs' writing). Slightly shaded at edges on front, shaded at right margin on verso. File holes at blank left edge. Overall, fine condition.
