EMILE GRIFFITH
Black and white photograph of Emile Griffith mugging for the camera
with his hands up.
Photograph signed: "Emile Griffith". B/w, 8x10 overall, image
7¼x8½ (one surface). Emile Griffith (1938-2013), born in St. Thomas,
Virgin Islands, was World Welterweight Champ in 1961, 1962-1963 and
1963-1965 and World Middleweight Champ in 1966-1967 and 1967-1968. He was
matched against Benny "Kid" Paret for his first welterweight title at
Miami Beach on April 1, 1961, and won with a knockout in the 13th round.
Griffith fought against Dick Tiger for the world middleweight title on
April 25, 1966. He won a 15-round decision, becoming the third fighter to
hold both the welterweight and middleweight championships. Griffith used
foot and hand speed to throw short, quick punches and combinations, but often
seemed to lose his concentration and focus, even during important fights.
Ironically, he was often accused of lacking the "killer instinct". Griffith
won 85 professional fights, 23 by knockout, and lost 25, two by knockout.
He also fought two draws and one no-contest bout. Griffith was inducted into
the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990. Fine
condition.
