EMILE GRIFFITH
11x14 poster for the film Ring of Fire, a documentary portraying the life of the boxing legend
Poster signed: "Emile Griffith". Color, 11x14. Emile Griffith (1938-2013) was a retired boxing champion whose career spanned over twenty years. Griffith was matched against Benny "Kid" Paret for his first welterweight title at Miami Beach on April 1, 1961, and won with a knockout in the 13th round. He fought for the world middleweight title on April 25, 1966, against Dick Tiger, and he won a 15-round decision, becoming the third fighter to hold both the welterweight and middleweight championships, and the first fighter from the Virgin Islands to ever win a boxing World Championship. Griffith used foot and hand speed to throw a lot of short, quick punches and combinations, but often seemed to lose his concentration and focus, even during important fights. Ironically, he was often accused of lacking the "killer instinct." He won 85 professional fights, 23 by knockout, and lost 25, 2 by knockout. He also fought 2 draws and 1 no-contest. In 2005, directors Dan Klores and Ron Berger produced a documentary on Griffith's life called Ring of Fire. The film was nominated for Best Documentary in the Black Reel Awards and the Sundance Film Festival. Lightly bowed. Otherwise, fine condition.
