EMILE GRUPPÉ
Handwritten letter from Rockport, which he helped transform into an artists colony. With an original signed drawing of a maritime scene on verso.
Autograph Letter signed: "Essern", 5½x3½ picture postcard. Rockport, Gloucester, Massachusetts, 1943 August 7. Addressed in his hand to John Buscemi, Philadelphia. In full: "Greetings and a happy birthday, with many more to follow. I have been looking for a letter from you, but none has come. We are enjoying our place and the acquaintances. The weather has been beautiful. Regards to your family." On verso: Original Art signed: "Emile A. Gruppe", a Gruppé maritime scene of a fishing boat being unloaded. American painter Emile Gruppé (1896-1978) was born in the US but spent his early life in Holland with his father, Charles Gruppé, a well-known landscape painter. Emile Gruppé, who discovered Rockport on Massachusetts' Cape Ann in 1925, lived the rest of his life there, painting, running his own gallery (still operating today under his son Robert), and teaching aspiring artists. Gruppé painted mostly in oil on canvas, producing mostly impressionist landscapes and seascapes but also portraits and figures. Auction prices of his artwork generally exceed those received for most of his contemporaries of the Rockport school. His brother, Karl Gruppé was a prominent sculptor. Lightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
