Signed Autograph Quotation from Paul and Virginia, an opera performed by her company
Autograph Quotation signed: "Emma Abbott", 4¼3½ In full: "By the air that I breathe/and by the heaven above me/by the God I adore/and who my truth doth see,/By thy tears, thy smiles so loving/I swear I will live but for thee - Grand duo - 'Paul and Virginia'". American operatic soprano Emma Abbott (1850-1891) had great stage success in Milan and Paris, and signed a contract with the Royal Opera Company in 1876, but she was dismissed after refusing on moral grounds to sing Violeta the courtesan in Verdi's La Traviata. Returning to the US, she formed in 1878 the Abbott English Opera Company, managed by her husband but with Emma retaining artistic control. Known as "the people's prima donna," Abbott was unpopular with critics because her company performed in English and abridged many works. Her repertoire included Paul and Virginia, an opera by Victor Massé adapted from a novel. Toned. Otherwise fine condition.
