The famous opera singer pens her name beneath a French sentiment, dated on 1931 and written on letterhead from Nice, France, in black ink
Autograph Quotation Signed in French, translated in full: "Those who sing/ in the face of evil bewitch it,/ Emma Calvé/1931", in black ink, 5¼x5. Sentiment from the French proverb: Those who sing in the face of evil bewitch it; those who cry in the face of evil augment it. French operatic soprano Emma Calvé (1858-1942) was a classic diva: musically talented, dramatically powerful, and personally temperamental. She performed in many of the world's great opera stages, including the Opera Comique in Paris, Milan's La Scala, London's Covent Gardens, and the New York Metropolitan. In 1893, she performed Carmen in London, and would repeat the role on American stages. To preserve her voice, Calvé made a number of recordings of her most popular roles, and also appeared in a number of film shorts recorded between 1915 and 1935. Large tear on bottom right corner, with right margin being badly torn and frayed. Toned. Stains across. Top edge frayed. Folds through center. Paper remnants and adhesive residue on verso. Light surface creases. Tear through center intersecting 'Calvé', but signature still clearly legible. Otherwise, fine condition.
