Signature: "Emma D.E.N. Southworth" in blue ink. 4x2¼ card.
E.D.E.N. Southworth (1819-1899) was a 19th-century American novelist.
After being abandoned by her inventor husband, Frederick H. Southworth, in 1844
Southworth began teaching and writing stories to support herself and her
children; her first novel The Irish Refugee was published by the
Baltimore Saturday Visitor, and many of her other early works appeared in The
National Era (famed for publishing Beecher-Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin).
The majority of her work, however, appeared in Robert Bonner's New York Ledger,
signing a contract in 1857 to write exclusively for this publication.
Southworth wrote over sixty novels during her career, most famously the
adventure-tale The Hidden Hand in 1859, but also The Lost Heiress
(1854), The Fatal Marriage (1863), and The Lost Lady of Lone
(1890). A lifelong supporter of women's rights, Southworth became very good
friends with author Harriet Beecher Stowe. Toned. Very soiled and stained in
margins. Corners rounded. Soiled throughout. Ink notes on verso in unknown hand.
Otherwise, fine condition.
