EMMA EAMES
The soprano signs with her first husband's last name
Autograph sentiment signed: "Yours truly/Emma Eames Story", in
black ink, 5x3. Lyric soprano Emma Eames (1865-1952) made her
professional debut with the Paris Opera in 1889, singing Gounod's
Romeo et Juliette. A regular at the Metropolitan from 1891 to
1909, she also performed frequently at Covent Garden, where she developed a
keen rivalry with diva Nellie Melba. Eames married twice, to painter
Julian Story in 1891 and to American baritone Emilio de Gogoza, from whom she
took her name, in 1911. Eames left the opera stage in 1912, but continued
concert performances through 1916. Toned. Fold through center. Top right corner
creased. Corners slightly worn. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise,
fine condition.
